When the Coleman’s
did the
interview in the early spring of 2007 they were living on a small farm with
4 acres. Then in July 2007 they moved to their beautiful farm on 50 acres
nestled in the rolling hills of Oregon’s wine country. Here they can take
care of business and run their Transporter service with ease. Recently they
added a fully stocked ranch store of beautiful alpaca finished products to Wings
& A Prayer Alpacas.
Prior to alpacas,
Randy worked as a Journeyman Mechanic and Barbara was an executive
secretary. When their herd kept growing and they were running out of day
after working full time away from the farm and then coming home to "do the
alpacas" they realized something had to change - and fast! Randy quit his
"paycheck" job in May of 2003 to operate the farm full time. Barbara's job
was permanently eliminated in July of 2003 and they have been full time
alpaca farmers ever since, never once looking back. Considering both of them
are quite a few years from "retirement age", they feel very fortunate to
have found alpacas when they did and to have been able to "retire" from a
normal J.O.B. (Just Over Broke!). These animals are their passion AND their
livelihood.
Randy shares wonderful stories about alpacas and transporting and Barbara
gives insights on how they successfully market their farm, Suri herdsires and
other services. One of the special services involves a community project
called “The Sock Brigade” which they both share in great detail.
Their farm is always open to anyone who
wants to come by and see or talk about alpacas, whether you are seasoned
breeders or merely interested in learning more about alpacas and the
lifestyle they offer. If they’re home, the farm is open - welcome!
